About this treatment

Stand-up sunbeds use higher-pressure tubes than traditional lay-down beds, delivering a more even, faster-developing tan. You stand inside the booth with the door closed; the session is over before you know it. Better for clients with claustrophobia and arguably more hygienic — no surface contact.

Sun Palms run all UV tanning at House of Beauty as a partner operation. The stand-up is one bed, so we'd recommend booking ahead during peak hours — Sun Palms have their own booking system separate from House of Beauty's salon bookings.

What to expect

  1. Skin-type assessment

First-time clients have a 5-minute Fitzpatrick skin-type check with the Sun Palms team to set a safe starting session length.

  2. Goggles & lotion

Disposable UV goggles provided. Optional Sun Palms-stocked tan-accelerator lotions available.

  3. Session

6 minutes for new tanners and Fitzpatrick I–II skin; 9 minutes for established tanners; 12 minutes for darker skin types or maintenance.

  4. Cool down

Hydrate, moisturise. Don't shower for 4 hours after to let the tan develop.

Aftercare

Hydrate generously and moisturise daily — sunbed-tanned skin loses moisture faster than untanned skin. Avoid soaps with harsh exfoliants for the first 24 hours. Maximum 1 session per 24 hours and twice per week is best for tan building without skin stress.

Safety & suitability

Sun Palms follow UK Sunbed (Regulation) Act 2010 standards. Under-18s cannot use the beds under any circumstances. Pregnancy, certain medications and skin conditions can be contraindications — disclose at consultation.

FAQs

How long is a stand-up sunbed session?

Sun Palms stand-up sessions run 6, 9 or 12 minutes depending on your skin type and tan stage. New clients always start at the shortest session and build up gradually.

What's the difference between stand-up and lay-down sunbeds?

Stand-up beds use higher-pressure tubes that deliver a stronger, more even tan in less time. They're more hygienic (no contact with surfaces) and better for clients who don't like enclosed spaces.

How often can I use a sunbed?

UV regulations allow no more than one session in any 24-hour period. For tan-building, twice a week is the recommended cadence with at least 48 hours between sessions.

Do I need to wear eye protection?

Yes — disposable goggles are mandatory and provided free at every session. UV exposure to unprotected eyes is genuinely dangerous.
