Lip filler is one of the most-requested treatments at our Donnington studio — and the question we get most often isn't about the appointment itself. It's about what to do once you leave. Aftercare is the difference between a beautifully settled, natural-looking result and an avoidable bruise that lingers for a week. Here's exactly what we tell our clients.
The first 24 hours
Treat the first day as a recovery day. Your lips have just had a series of small, clinical injections — they need calm, clean conditions to start integrating the product properly.
- No touching, pressing or pursing. That includes resting your face on your hand. Avoid kissing and avoid drinking through a straw — both create suction.
- No makeup on or near the lips for 24 hours. The injection points are small but they're still open micro-channels. Lipstick, gloss and lip liner can wait a day.
- Use a clean ice pack or cool compress. Ten minutes on, ten minutes off, wrapped in something clean. Cold reduces inflammation; direct ice is too aggressive.
- Drink plenty of water. Hyaluronic acid filler is hydrophilic — well-hydrated tissue settles better.
- Sleep slightly elevated. An extra pillow on the first night reduces overnight swelling.
The 48-hour window
This is the period that separates a smooth heal from a slow one. The rules are short and worth following to the letter.
- No exercise that raises your heart rate. No gym, no hot yoga, no sauna or steam room. Increased circulation to the face during this window is the single most common cause of unnecessary bruising.
- No alcohol. Alcohol is a vasodilator; it widens blood vessels and worsens both swelling and bruise visibility.
- No flying if you can help it. Pressurised cabins and dry air are not your friend in the first 48 hours.
- No facials, microneedling, laser or massage. Anything that disturbs the skin around the lips should wait at least two weeks.
Days 3 to 14: settling in
This is when most of the visible swelling resolves and the lips start to look like the result you're going to actually live with. A few small habits help.
- Keep using a hydrating, fragrance-free lip balm. Vaseline is fine; medicated or exfoliating balms are not.
- Resume gentle skincare around (but not directly on) the lips. Skip retinol on the lip border for the first week.
- Don't panic about asymmetry. Filler genuinely does settle differently on each side in the first 7–10 days. Wait the full two weeks before judging the result.
- Take photos in the same lighting at day 1, day 7 and day 14. It's the best way to see how the lips have softened and refined over the period.
The 14-day review
Every lip filler client at House of Beauty is invited back for a complimentary 14-day review. By that point any residual swelling has fully resolved and we can assess the true volume and shape with you. If there's anything to refine, we book it in then — never sooner. Treating "the swelling" instead of "the result" is how lips end up overdone.
When to call us
Some bruising, tenderness and asymmetry in the first week is completely normal. Get in touch sooner rather than later if you experience any of the following:
- Sudden, increasing pain that isn't easing with paracetamol
- Skin that becomes blotchy, mottled, white or unusually cold
- A hard, painful lump that grows over time rather than softening
- Any sign of infection — heat, spreading redness, fever
Our practitioners are reachable directly if you've been treated with us; full out-of-hours guidance is given to every client at the appointment.
The bottom line
Good lip filler is half the work of the practitioner and half the work of the client in the days that follow. Stick to the aftercare above and you'll get the smoothest possible heal, the most natural-looking final result, and the longest wear out of every session. We'd rather you booked smarter than more often.
If you're thinking about your first treatment or a top-up, drop us a line or book a consultation online — we'll talk through your goals, budget and what's realistic before any product is ever opened.
FAQs
How long does lip filler swelling last?
Most clients see the bulk of swelling settle within 48–72 hours. The lips continue to soften and refine over the following two weeks, which is why we don't review or top up before the 14-day mark.
Can I exercise after lip filler?
We ask clients to avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours. Raising your heart rate increases blood flow to the face, which can worsen swelling and bruising during the early healing window.
When can I wear lipstick after lip filler?
We recommend waiting 24 hours before applying any product to the lips, and only with clean tools. The injection points need that window to close fully.
When should I book a top-up?
Never within the first two weeks. We invite every client to a 14-day review where we can assess settled volume and decide together whether a small refinement is needed.
